Every week lately has been a lot…from H-CAN

Dear Indivisible friends,

Every week lately has been a LOT – let’s jump right to the weekend: got plans Friday night? This is a quick plug for an all-H-CAN event – H-CAN Quizzo Night – there’s still space! It’s this Friday, May 16th from 7-9pm at the Haverford CREC.

Come enjoy a fun night out, meet other H-CAN members, learn some new facts, and maybe win some prizes like gift cards to The Bookery/Plant Roots, House Cup and Wawa! Cost is $15 per player – please complete this registration form asap. BYO snacks and drinks. Reach out to Donna at welcome@h-can.org with any questions. Bring friends!

It’s a bit overwhelming to think about all the things we need to call about – there are so many. If hearing the difference that it makes is motivating to you, take a look at Jess Craven’s Facebook posts where she chats with Rep. Seth Magaziner and Rep. Don Beyer about the impact calls can make (and a handwritten letter now and then, too!). We encourage you to keep at it and make those calls whenever you can squeeze them in each day. It makes a difference and it matters!
Highlighted Call to Action
Stop the Unlawful ICE Detainment of Immigrants – not really more to say about this horror – we need to be pushing back hard on this and making our legislators do something. Here is a suggested script.Script: I’m calling [REP or SENATOR] because I’m outraged about the illegal detainment of immigrants who are in the US legally by violent ICE agents who refuse to identify themselves or produce a warrant signed by a judge. People – especially people of color – are being kidnapped and disappeared with no due process. What are you, as my [representative/senator] doing about this? Action needs to be taken immediately to get these people back and we need to stop ICE’s unlawful behavior. We will not allow a dictatorship to take hold in this country. I expect the [representative/senator] to take action now!

Call to Action – Repeated CTA but necessary!

Say “No” to the Tax Scam That Hurts Us and Helps Billionaires

Republicans in Congress are trying to ram through Trump Tax Scam, 2.0 by using budget reconciliation—a wonky process that would allow them to pass legislation with only Republican votes to give the ultra-wealthy trillions of dollars in tax breaks while expecting the rest of us to foot the bill. They’re planning to slash funding to Medicaid, which would undermine health care for over 70 million nursing home residents, children, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and others. Also at risk are funds for SNAP, early education programs, and countless other programs that working families rely on, all to give billionaires massive handouts. We cannot let Trump and the Republicans get away with gutting these vital programs.  A sign that Republicans might be able to get with the program regarding Medicaid (and I can’t believe I’m posting and supporting something written by this guy): Missouri Senator Josh Hawley wrote an NYT op-ed in support of Medicaid! So perhaps this will break through with other R legislators. Read the op-ed here and feel free to reference Hawley’s piece and talking points when you call yo

ur Members of Congress. Tell them you want them to vote NO on the budget reconciliation legislation. Note: once all committee work is complete, the House and Senate will both need to approve and vote on the full reconciliation bill. House Republicans are aiming for a floor vote by Memorial Day Weekend. Make calls to have an impact!

Script: I’m calling to urge [REP or SENATOR] to oppose the budget reconciliation bill and its harmful cuts to vital programs. Specifically, I’m extremely concerned about [PICK 1-3 budget provisions]:

  • Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP
  • Boosting of funding for ICE, when they are kidnapping people who are in the US legally
  • Greenlighting the sale of public lands
  • Cuts to Student Aid
  • Cuts to Federal Worker Retirement Benefits
  • Defunding the Consumer Financial Protect Bureau
  • Rolling back green energy grants
  • The Defense Department’s handouts to Elon Musk
  • The partisan attack on federal regulations and
  • The limit on federal judges’ ability to hold the Trump administration accountable.

Congress should pass a fair and responsible budget that helps working families and communities, not one that slashes our benefits to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. Thank you.

And instead, encourage them to pass HR 2753, the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act. Here is Indivisible’s link with more talking points for calls to Rep. Scanlon and other Democratic representatives.

Special message for Sen. McCormick: I am outraged that you are considering cuts to Medicaid, SNAP and other critical programs in order to give massive tax breaks to the wealthy. Republicans are taking food away from children and denying health care to those who need it most so that billionaires can get even richer. This is unacceptable and is not a Republican versus Democratic debate. It’s a life-or-death decision. Hard-working Americans should not be paying the price for these handouts to people like Elon Musk. I expect you to stand up for your constituents in PA, not Trump’s billionaire friends.

You can also try to raise this topic at Sen. McCormick’s upcoming tele-town hall on May 14 at 7 pm. RSVP here.
