Your to-do’s (and more)

Election Day is next Tuesday, so this week’s to-dos emphasize getting yourself, your community, and folks in key states out to vote — plus actions to address the Trump Shutdown. But first, Ezra breaks down three big fights happening now.

Friends,

I can’t help it. I’m still beaming from No Kings Day. I’ve said the phrase “the largest peaceful protest in American history” more times than I can count.

But we all know that no successful anti-authoritarian movement in history has relied exclusively on one-day protests, so I want to focus on what we can do right now to build on our momentum. I have three immediate ideas: Spotify (seriously), healthcare, and off-year elections.

1. Spotify is capitulating to the regime, but we can make them reverse course.

Earlier this month, Spotify began running ads to recruit for ICE, making them an active enabler of the hiring spree to build an American secret police force. That’s bad, and if we want there to be consequences for capitulation, we have to be the consequence!

If you’ve joined a weekly “What’s the Plan?” call, you’ve probably heard me and Leah reflect on the lessons from the successful Disney/ABC/Kimmel campaign. The regime bullied, the institution capitulated, the people rebelled, the institution reversed course, and democracy sat up a little straighter the next day.

What worked to influence Disney can work with Spotify! Like Disney, Spotify is a multi-billion dollar corporation that relies on subscriptions. That means we, the paying customers, have real influence.

So on Thursday, Leah and I sent a formal letter to Spotify, pointing out their problematic ads and requesting a meeting. If they do not respond by tomorrow, we’re going to launch a campaign to push them from capitulation to active resistance. Stay tuned for more soon, and come to “What’s the Plan?” on Thursday to discuss next steps.

2. The GOP-caused implosion of healthcare.

Regular Americans of all political persuasions are about to find out that Republicans blew up the healthcare market. We unpack this a bit more at the bottom of this newsletter, so here’s all you need to understand right now:

  • The Big Ugly Bill gutted Medicaid and killed really important subsidies that make health insurance affordable.
  • With health insurance open enrollment starting next week, the direct consequences of that are about to become very real and very personal. Millions of us are about to see our health insurance bills jump by thousands of dollars.
  • This is a crisis that’ll drive up costs for everyone, regardless of how you get insurance. When millions of people lose healthcare, it starts a “death spiral” that hurts us all.

Democrats are (mostly) holding the line in the Trump Shutdown fight to avoid all of this, so it’s especially important for your Dems to hear your appreciation this week. On the flip side, if you’ve got a Republican Member of Congress, you should ask why the hell they’re shutting down the government to blow up your health coverage.

3. Yes, we still have elections, and we need to win them.

Remember when we kicked Elon Musk’s ass (electorally) up and down the state of Wisconsin for that Supreme Court election in the spring? Next week’s elections give us another chance to send a massive message about the electoral consequences of Trumpism nationwide. Consider these:

  1. Proposition 50 in California: This is the California response to GOP state gerrymandering. The results could directly determine which party controls the House after next year’s midterms.
  2. Virginia and New Jersey elections: To hold this regime in check, Dems have to win governorships and as many state legislative seats as possible, and in Virginia specifically, they have a chance to build a Democratic trifecta right in Trump’s backyard.
  3. Pennsylvania Supreme Court: The PA Supreme Court currently has a 5-2 Democratic majority, but three of those Dems face retention votes next week. If Dems lose one, they still keep the majority for years to come. If Dems lose two, Republicans could take control of the court before the next presidential election.

I believe a big part of the power of this movement is practical — what can we actually do to change things together right now. If that’s where your head is, read on for your weekly to-dos.

Your weekly to-dos

  1. Make a plan to vote in your local elections by next Tuesday, November 4. Election Day is next Tuesday, and millions of Americans have a chance to elect important local leaders — judges, council members, school boards, and more — crucial to defending and rebuilding democracy. If you haven’t already, make a plan to cast your vote!
  2. If you have a GOP representative, tell them to seat Adelita Grijalva and stop the Epstein Cover-up. Grijalva won her special election to Congress more than a month ago, but Speaker Johnson still refuses to swear her in — likely because she’s the last signature needed to force a vote on the Epstein Files. Email your rep to demand they put pressure on Johnson.
  3. Call GOP senators to demand a bipartisan shutdown deal that stops MAGA healthcare cuts and price surges. Millions of Americans are about to learn how much their healthcare premiums will jump in 2026, but Republicans are still keeping the government shut down, rather than addressing the crisis. Let’s let them hear it.
  4. Join our Virginia Call-A-Thon this weekend to get out the vote and help elect a Democratic trifecta in VA! Virginians can flip the governor’s mansion and build a blue trifecta in next Tuesday’s election, so we’re calling into VA all weekend to help Dems at every level win. Join our call-a-thon from anywhere. All you need is your phone and a computer, and we offer a live training before each shift!

P.S. To ratchet up pressure on House Republicans even further, we’re rolling out billboards in six key Republican districts — calling swingable House Republicans out by name for sitting back as healthcare costs spiral. If you’d like to fund our billboards and national organizing work to end the Trump Shutdown, please chip in today if you’re able.
