Here’s some background information. State Attorneys General have filed three important federal lawsuits (so far) against the Trump Administration:

+ Attorney General Peter F. Neronha (RI) co-leads a coalition of 23 attorneys general suing to stop the implementation of a new Trump administration policy that orders the withholding of trillions of dollars in funding that every state in the country relies on to provide essential services to millions of Americans. The action has been filed in United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. This lawsuit was led by the attorneys general of RI, NY, CA, IL, MA, and NJ and is joined by AZ, CO, CT, DE, HI, ME, MD, MI, MN, NV, NM, NC, OR, VT, WA, WI, and the District of Columbia.

+ Attorney General Letitia James (NY) leads a coalition of 18 other attorneys general in filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop the unauthorized disclosure of Americans’ private information and sensitive data. Attorney General James’ lawsuit asserts that the Trump administration illegally provided Elon Musk and the so-called “Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)” unauthorized access to the Treasury Department’s central payment system, and therefore to Americans’ most sensitive personal information, including bank account details and Social Security numbers. Joining Attorney General James in filing the lawsuit are the attorneys general of AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IL, ME, MD, MA, MN, NV, NJ, NC, OR, RI, VT, and WI.

+ A federal judge in Massachusetts granted a temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration’s cuts to National Institutes of Health research funding after 22 states filed a lawsuit challenging that order. The lawsuit, filed Monday in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, seeks to block a change by the National Institutes of Health that would cut payments to universities, medical centers and researchers studying cancer, rare diseases and other health issues. That announcement, made on Friday, would limit the indirect costs it will pay grantees to 15 percent of a grant. The lawsuit was filed by 22 states known for being powerhouses of biomedical research, including MA, CA, MD, NY, MI, IL, AZ, CT, CO, DE, HI, ME, MN, NV, NJ, NM, NC, OR, RI, VT, WA, and WI.
